00:00:04.273 --> 00:00:08.168
(music playing)

00:00:08.168 --> 00:00:09.840
My name is Inbal Becker Reshef,

00:00:09.840 --> 00:00:14.720
and I use cameras on satellites to see
what is growing on farms around the world.

00:00:14.720 --> 00:00:19.920
NASA Harvest is NASA's Applied Sciences
program on food security and agriculture.

00:00:20.301 --> 00:00:25.600
Our big mission is really to help inform
decisions on agricultural sustainability,

00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:30.868
on agricultural market stability, and
on food security overall.

00:00:30.923 --> 00:00:38.400
We all eat food. We all need to have food to live and to thrive.
And so, therefore, it's really important for us

00:00:38.400 --> 00:00:43.120
to have ways of monitoring the amount of food
that we're producing to be able to anticipate

00:00:43.120 --> 00:00:46.480
how much food we're going to produce,
where we're going to produce the food--

00:00:46.480 --> 00:00:50.640
or helping to inform farmers themselves who
are growing food how can they grow their food

00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:56.299
more effectively, more efficiently. So it really
matters, I think, from farmers to ministries to

00:00:56.299 --> 00:00:59.395
everybody we're talking about our food production.

00:00:59.434 --> 00:01:04.259
I think the biggest inspiration is really to see the impact of this work,

00:01:04.259 --> 00:01:08.272
and see how much more
potential there still is for better utilization

00:01:08.317 --> 00:01:12.074
of satellite information to inform really
important decisions

00:01:12.074 --> 00:01:16.042
around sustainability, around food security, around food prices.

00:01:16.042 --> 00:01:19.752
I grew
up moving almost every two years of my life.

00:01:19.834 --> 00:01:26.494
I lived across three different continents. I spent
probably a fairly formative part of my life living in Kenya as well.

00:01:26.494 --> 00:01:31.834
And I think one of the things
that helped me appreciate is how diverse our world is in terms of our environment.

00:01:31.880 --> 00:01:34.954
I always loved  science and math, but also

00:01:34.954 --> 00:01:40.362
had a passion for art, and so I always took classes in art. But, I took,
also, computer science, and I took

00:01:40.362 --> 00:01:46.000
math classes, and eventually decided not to go the art way and keep that as a hobby.

00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:50.237
They're always going to be challenges, and they come in small and big and every day.

00:01:50.237 --> 00:01:55.266
And I think part of it is just remembering again
what you're doing and why you're doing it.

00:01:55.311 --> 00:02:14.051
(music playing)
