00:00:02.968 --> 00:00:07.764
(music playing and sound of typing)

00:00:07.764 --> 00:00:12.434
I'm Jessica Taylor, and I bring NASA science to the public in fun and engaging ways.

00:00:12.490 --> 00:00:18.188
Our Earth system is all connected. And for us to understand the complex Earth system,

00:00:18.188 --> 00:00:23.777
we have to understand from a global perspective, all the way down to that local perspective --

00:00:23.777 --> 00:00:27.904
which is what citizen scientists, volunteers on the ground, can help us with.

00:00:27.904 --> 00:00:36.720
Through the My NASA Data project, we are providing NASA's Earth science data directly to the student or to the teacher.

00:00:36.720 --> 00:00:40.560
And that's really where the
name My NASA Data came from --

00:00:40.560 --> 00:00:45.735
because we want NASA's Earth science data to be your Earth science data,

00:00:45.735 --> 00:00:49.594
so you can understand what's  going on in the environment.

00:00:50.083 --> 00:00:53.628
When I'm not working,
I'm mostly spending time with my family.

00:00:53.675 --> 00:00:57.154
I have two girls that are very active.

00:00:57.192 --> 00:01:00.038
We enjoy going to the beach together,

00:01:00.071 --> 00:01:01.920
we enjoy swimming together,

00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:08.240
and we enjoy dancing together. I used to dance a
lot growing up and so it's really fun to be able

00:01:08.240 --> 00:01:09.964
to share that hobby with them.

00:01:09.964 --> 00:01:16.342
Well, I first became interested in meteorology in particular because a teacher of mine asked me

00:01:16.342 --> 00:01:19.501
to do a project on something that I was interested in.

00:01:19.501 --> 00:01:21.821
I decided to study lightning.

00:01:21.821 --> 00:01:25.802
I loved watching
thunderstorms, and I just thought they were beautiful.

00:01:25.802 --> 00:01:32.395
In this project, what I learned was that scientists were still learning about how lightning happens,

00:01:32.395 --> 00:01:38.488
and I just thought that was really cool that you could get a job learning about things that were of interest to you.

00:01:38.488 --> 00:01:46.184
And, to me, that's really kind of the definition of a scientist - is learning about things that are happening in our natural world.

00:01:46.184 --> 00:01:49.839
Working for NASA is pretty cool. I'm not gonna lie.

00:01:49.901 --> 00:01:58.859
What I'm doing is allowing people to see that they are a part of answers and solutions to the Earth system.

00:01:58.859 --> 00:02:03.660
And that everyone can practice being a scientist.

00:02:03.660 --> 00:02:10.043
And everyone can have a voice in understanding what's going on with our environment.

00:02:10.043 --> 00:02:25.936
(music playing)
